The Colt 1911 pistol is famous for being the first self-loading semi-auto handgun adopted by the U.S. military under the name M1911. It was chosen for two major reasons:

• Reliability: A prototype 1911 famously fired 6000 .45 ACP rounds in 1910 without jamming once.
• Power: It was originally chambered for .45 ACP, which provided adequate firepower to perform well in a variety of environments.

This superior design ended up proving itself timeless. The M1911A1 remained the standard issue sidearm for American armed forces until it was replaced by the Beretta M9 in 1986, chambered for the NATO-standard 9mm cartridge. Today, the 1911 pistol remains in use by militaries, law enforcement officers, and civilians all over the world.
