The 6.5 Creedmoor's design is essentially a modified .30 Thompson Center cartridge. Specifically, the diameter of the case was reduced ("necked down"), and the general design was slightly tweaked for improved aerodynamics and reduced recoil. The result is that 6.5 Creedmoor bolt-action rifles are some of the most accurate rifles on the market today. In addition to being incredible for long-range competitive shooters, these cartridges are also highly effective at bringing down medium game.

6.5 Creedmoor ammo is closest in performance to .260 Remington and 6.5x47mm Lapua. However, it was based on .30 Thompson Center; its design isn't related to either of those two cartridges.
6.5 Creedmoor was built for long-range target shooting. As such, it's the perfect caliber for any application where range and precision are key. That includes hunting, long-range competitions, and recreational shooting.
The effective range depends on both the type of 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition being used and the game you're after. Bullets with heavier weights don't travel as far but are less susceptible to wind drift, while lightweight bullets are the opposite. Generally, larger animals like deer can be dropped at 800 yards, while smaller predator animals like coyotes can be taken down from as far as 1000 yards away.
