38 Special Double-Action Revolvers

What is a Double-Action Revolver?

There are two main kinds of revolvers: single-action and double-action revolvers.

With a single-action revolver, pulling the trigger only advances the cylinder (ergo, "single" action). You have to pull the hammer back before every shot. While this makes for a more accurate gun, it doesn't shoot very fast.

With a double-action gun, pulling the trigger advances the cylinder and pulls the hammer back. All you need to do is pull the trigger until you run out of bullets. While this makes follow-up shots easy, the trigger pull weight is extremely heavy. The effort to shoot can be enough to destabilize your gun and make it less accurate. Double-action revolvers are better in close-quarters engagement, where speed is more important than accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the advantage of a double-action gun?

If you prefer shooting revolvers over semi-auto handguns, DA revolvers make great CCWs. The trigger resistance inherent to the gun's design prevents accidental discharges in the holster or pocket, and the rapid follow-up shots make it very effective for close-range self-defense. For a reason, these pistols were service weapons for law enforcement for decades.

Is double-action better than single-action?

Each of these handguns has its pros and cons. SA firearms have a slower fire rate but a much lighter trigger pull. The ease of pulling the trigger and stopping to pull the hammer back, forcing you to re-sight on your target after each shot, improves accuracy. However, DA's relatively rapid rate of fire makes it invaluable in close-range scenarios. While its trigger pull weight is much heavier, that weight prevents accidental discharges. Which one is better depends on your needs.

Can I have my double-action revolver delivered directly to my house?

Unfortunately, all firearm orders need to be sent to your local FFL dealer. You can pick it up from them after it's successfully delivered.
