Keep Your Gun in Peak Condition

Every firearm requires its own unique cleaning regimen. However, cleaning kits typically have the same components:

  • Cleaning rod (or bore cable or rope)
  • Brush
  • Pick for obstruction removal
  • Scraper
  • Bore mop
  • Bore reflector
  • Patches
  • Copper and bore solvents

While some gun cleaning kits have more or less materials than this list, these are the basics you can expect. Choose the handgun or rifle cleaning kit that's made for your firearm from Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do you need to clean your gun?

That depends. With normal use, like hunting or practicing at the range, do a quick wipe-down after every shooting session and do a deep clean with your gun cleaning kit once a month. If you are using corrosive ammo or frequently taking your gun into humid or dirty conditions, a deep cleaning every one or two weeks may be necessary.

What happens if you don't clean your rifle?

Over time, powder residue from discharged bullets will build up inside the barrel. As barrels are rifled with a precise diameter, the buildup affects how the bullet shoots down the barrel. This may cause damage to the barrel or even cause a malfunction. It will also lead to cartridges not feeding into the chamber properly, causing jams and misfirings.

Do I need a gun cleaning kit?

If you don't want to get a rifle or pistol cleaning kit, you can assemble your own collection of tools and materials. However, if you want to easily get everything you need for your specific gun, it's easier to go with a kit.
