The M14 was the result of careful engineering by Springfield's gunsmiths to create a .308 semi-auto rifle that could theoretically replace four guns: the M1 Garand, M1 carbine, M3 SMG, and M1918 BAR. While it didn't quite manage to do that due to the limits of .308 Winchester, the result was a high-performance firearm perfectly suited for sharpshooting. When the M1A rifle was released in 1971, civilians and law enforcement personnel got to experience that performance for themselves.

The M1A and M14 are practically the same with only small differences. The first is that there is no selector switch on the M1A. That lack of a selector switch requires a different receiver than the M14, which had a cutout for the switch and component parts of the selector switch. M1As also don't have bayonet lugs. M14s are manufactured using a drop forge process, while the M1A isn't. Finally, you can only add a flash suppressor to the M14.
That depends. The AR-15 is more customizable, featuring a huge array of caliber options, a fully modular design, and a huge aftermarket industry for parts and accessories. The M1A is a simple and efficient design that foregoes all the bells and whistles to give you a consistently reliable and accurate gun with a few attachment points for accessories. Competitive shooters might prefer the M1A for its consistent performance, while customers with tactical applications may opt for the versatility of an AR-15.
