This Ruger American Pistol Compact is chambered in 9mm Luger and has no manual safety. Originally introduced in December 2015, the feature-rich Ruger American Pistol was designed with the latest U.S. Military standards in mind and was tested in the harshest environments to ensure the rugged reliability consumers have come to expect from Ruger.

With a 3.55" barrel, overall dimensions of 6.65" long, 4.48" high and a weight of 28.75 ounces with an empty magazine, the Ruger American Pistol Compact model shares all of the features and rugged reliability of the duty-size gun in a smaller, lighter, more concealable package. It ships with small, medium and large replaceable grip modules and two nickel-Teflon® plated steel magazines (one 17-round extended magazine and one 12-round compact magazine).

The American-made Ruger American Pistol is built on a rigid, one-piece, precision-machined, black nitrided, stainless steel chassis with integral frame rails and fire control housing. Additional features include genuine Novak® LoMount Carry three-dot sights, a stainless steel slide with non-reflective, black nitride finish, a one-piece, high-performance, glass-filled nylon grip frame and a mil-standard 1913 accessory rail.

(5 out of 5) Ruger always delivers!
by from Phoenix, AZ on

Just received my Ruger RAP compact in 9mm and I am impressed! Can not say enough! Transaction and quality are both top notch!

(3 out of 5) Good Price, Not So Good Handgun
by from Rockledge, FL on

Gun jammed excessively with different type/brands of ammo. Sent back to Ruger and they replaced the extractor and repaired the slide. Trigger is horrible. Slot for trigger safety has sharp edges and the safety leaves this slot exposed when trigger is pulled. Causes pain and leaves marks on trigger finger after just one magazine. My wife refuses to shoot the gun because the trigger hurts her trigger finger so bad. Different gunsmiths have told me if a handgun price is too good to be true it probably is. This is the case with the Ruger American.

The gun shoots well. The slide just doesn't lock back when the magazine is empty. Don't know if that is typical of the gun or not. Will keep shooting to see if it continues to keep doing that.

(2 out of 5) Feed Problems
by from Garland, TX on

Lot of feed problems that started with the first clip, have to hold the clip in and use expensive 124 or 147 grain. Ruger replaced the 12 round clip and said the clip rattles in this model. That didn't seem to help, so I sent it in for repair, but still the same. I still have to use more expensive shells and hold with my little finger or left hand to ensure it doesn't jam. This is not the first gun I bought, but the only gun I had trouble with and is my one and only Ruger purchase.

(5 out of 5) Okay, being from Arizona, I could be biased, but probably not.

I don't work for Ruger. I do work on guns, including Rugers. When I am at a gun store, I never try to steer anyone toward or away from anything. I am seeing very positive receptions and reactions to the Ruger American in general. The ergonomics are nicely done. They shoot nicely. They eventually smooth out, after break in, and the action is very nice and smooth. The trigger is very decent for a striker fired pistol. In fact, it is exceptionally well done. Recoil is very nice and manageable. You generally sacrifice recoil management for light weight, and this one is no exception. It is a tad heavier than other poly frame pistols, but it shoots nicer too. It's a really fun pistol to shoot! It's accurate, easy to sight, and quick to come back on target, and that makes shooting more fun, and in a defensive situation, it makes the gun more effective. It's not my favorite pistol, but these are are hardly redundant, and I wish Ruger all the best with this model. It deserves a second look, for sure!

I really enjoyed shooting the American model by Ruger. Any magazine issues or other problems should be brought to Sturm Rugers attention, and they will sort those problems out. This is why we pay an extra $50-$400 for a new gun. You get a warranty. Technically, Ruger has no recognized written warranty, but they do have excellent customer service, with free, or deep discounted repair services. Any guns less than 1 year old will most likely 99% of the time be repaired or replaced free of charge. This is the same as Glock. I enjoyed shooting the American Model over the offerings from Glock, but I enjoy driving a Ford 302 Boss Mustang more than I enjoy driving a Toyota Camry too. Both cars will get me from A to B. One will make the drive lots more fun, and I just look cooler driving a Mustang.

I think Ruger's designers chose some really nice lines for the American Model. It definitely has a cool factor to it. I have experienced 1 or two small bobbles but after a few magazines down range, the gun ran like a Swiss watch. Taking the gun apart, shows a nice build quality, and nothing overtly substandard looking, at all. Ruger did a nice job on this one! We are very proud to have Ruger's factory in Arizona.

(3 out of 5) Clips Don't Fit
by from Garland, Texas on

Bought brand new and followed the instructions Ruger provided. Clips rattle when in empty. Ruger service said that is the design when I called to ask about the problem. Multiple jams while shooting Winchester 115 grain FMJ, which my M&P Shield has zero problems with. Eventually I started holding the clip up with my little finger and the gun shot accurately with no jams. Found a thread on Ruger.net where multiple people found similar issues.
