When i first opened the case I thought hum, looks a little better than I was expecting. Looking over it I could see I was going to need to spend some quality time removing spots of rust and general cleaning. I then noticed that the all the serial numbers matched... bolt, stock and barrel so I was even more pleased. I also noticed the cleaning rod was in place and both the sites were complete front site was NOT missing its hood. I then checked the sliding action of the rear site which worked as it should. The stock finish was not the greatest but had zero cracks and no wood had ever been repaired.
So, I was thinking wow there is absolutely nothing bad to say about this 60ish year old rifle... then I took out the bolt and looked down the barrel and was thinking ah !@#$. So I started cleaning the barrel for literally and hour and was not making much progress. I thought to google something to the affect of how to clean really bad rifle barrels and found a video that showed a guy who cut up a scouring pad the silver looking kind that are big.. you would use on a cast iron pan anyhow, he cut strands from it and wrapped those strands around a bore brush. He then put some oil on the brush and ran it back and forth....... holy cow if that did not work like a gem. Ok, not so crazy running it back and forth instead of the one direction but it cleaned it up in a matter of minutes and the bore now looks great.
Now that it was clean and i felt safe shooting my M48A I took it to the range. It was the last weapon I shot that day and a storm was about to hit so I shot five quick shots at 50 yards and had three at 10 O'clock high and the other two within the bullseye ring. I really can't give a clear picture of how well it shoots until I go back and take my time and shoot at least a box through it. The fact I was able to clean the barrel. Rifling is good by the way. The stock had not been damaged at all, and that all the serial numbers match made this a fantastic buy in my eyes.
I may have just gotten really lucky with the one I bought but reading other reviews as a whole they really are a very nice older rifle.
This is my third Yugo Mauser from Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore and it is a gem. Beautiful stock, clean bore, smooth action. A little time with a heat gun and rag took care of the cosmoline that had soaked in to the wood. Heat until the cosmoline sweats out then wipe away. Then apply several coats of Boiled Linseed Oil allowing 24 hours dry time between coats. Never sand, if you must, kerosene and a fine steel wool 000 or 0000 will remove any remaining oils. The linseed oil will protect the wood from anything you could do to it.
As far as the bolt, barrel, and receiver go C.L.P. and a micro fiber towel works for most, tough spots may require a plastic brush. Enjoy the fruits of your labor. The A after the 48 denotes stamped magazine floor plate no big deal the Germans did this since the mid thirties. I would encourage anyone with an interest in wood and metal battle rifles to buy on of these. They are a blast to shoot. Thanks for another great old rifle SOSS and A.T.I.
Based on the image provided, the rifle looks like its in fair condition. So I thought I was going to get the exact looking one or worst. But I was surprise that these look better than expected. Shipping was fast, only took 1 week to get to my FFL. I didn't care about the other imperfections, to me this was perfect. Since I can fix these things pretty good and restore it to its original state, without having to bubba the whole thing. All I cared about is the bore, since that one is a much pricey process. But the bore turned out to be bright and nice! Thank you Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore.
I just got mine today, and I am very pleased to finally have it! The description is a little misleading. The rifle has had almost all of the cosmoline sanded off the stock, but no replacement finish has been applied. My rifle will be more of a project than I anticipated. Watch for bits of rust on some accessories, but overall the rifle is in decent shape.
