Carbon fiber is a material exceptionally well-suited to the demanding tasks entrusted to cleaning rods. It effectively combines the best qualities of both stainless steel and coated cleaning rods, while also bringing its own valuable properties into the mix. Traditional stainless steel rods, if not handled with care, can potentially scratch or wear down firearm barrels, although they do not tend to pick up tiny, potentially damaging abrasive particles. On the other hand, "coated" rods provide some protection by preventing the stainless steel shaft from harming the rifling in your barrel. However, the downside is that the coating can accumulate these small abrasive particles, effectively turning the cleaning process into a bore-scraping operation with fine-grit sandpaper.
Carbon fiber rods, however, offer the best of both worlds. They are gentle on your bore like stainless steel, without the risk of scratching it, and they don't hold onto abrasive particles like coated rods. Additionally, carbon fiber rods possess the remarkable ability to flex to an extreme degree and then return to their original straight shape. This quality proved invaluable during Operation Iraqi Freedom when U.S. military armorers turned to Tipton for cleaning rods capable of maintaining service rifles in demanding conditions.
Referred to as "deluxe" cleaning rods, these tools feature an ergonomically designed handle that rotates on two sets of ball bearings. The result is a cleaning rod that smoothly follows the rifling when both pushing and pulling, even under pressure. The construction, with the "shank-through" design, also allows users to apply "reasonable" hammer blows to the end of the cleaning rod, facilitating the passage of a tight patch through the bore.
To cater to various firearm types, these cleaning rods are available in four different diameters and six lengths. Rifle and handgun rods are threaded for 8-32 accessories, except for 17 caliber and 20 caliber rods, which are threaded 5-40. Shotgun rods, on the other hand, are threaded 5/16″-27.
