What’s in the Box

  • Henry AR-7 Rifle
  • (2) 8 Round Magazines
  • Owner’s Manual

Since 1959, the venerable AR-7 has been the choice of U.S. Air Force pilots who need a small-caliber rifle they can count on for survival should they have to punch out over a remote area. Over the years, the AR-7s reputation for portability, ease of operation and reliability has carried over to the civilian world as well.

Today, its a favorite of bush pilots, backpackers and backcountry adventurers who, like their Air Force counterparts, need a rifle thats easy to carry but has the accuracy to reliably take down small game. Like the original Henry US Survival Rifle, the latest take on this innovative, semi-automatic rifle is lightweight (just 3.5 lbs) and highly portable. At just 16.5 inches long (when all the components are stowed), it fits easily into the cargo area of a plane or boat or in a backpack. And because its chambered in .22LR you can carry a large quantity of ammunition, without adding much weight to your gear.

When disassembled, the pieces fit inside the impact-resistant, waterproof stock, which will float should it take a trip overboard. Assembly is as easy as attaching the receiver to the stock, inserting the barrel and screwing on the barrel nut. In just a few seconds, without the need for any tools, the Henry U.S. Survival AR-7 is ready for action. The Henry U.S. Survival AR-7 comes standard with a sturdy steel barrel covered in tough ABS plastic and then coated with Teflon for complete protection against corrosion. Plus, its engineered for perfect balance and the ability to maintain its tack-driving accuracy, even after thousands of rounds. Like the barrel, the receiver is also coated with a layer of waterproof Teflon for superior weatherproofing, waterproof protection, even in harsh salt water environments. Plus, the updated receiver is grooved making it easy to top it off with your favorite optics.

(1 out of 5) Feeding debacle - comparable expectations
by from Delray Beach, FL on

I learned to shoot with the original Armalite AR-7. What a great little gun it was, and it really does float. I fired at least 1,000 rounds over one Vermont summer without any issues. I saw one on the rack at my local Dick’s Sporting Goods store and had to have it, if only for nostalgia. That was a few years ago, back when Dick’s still valued catering to their shooting sports customers. I remember the Charter Arms association clearly as well.

Putting aside a few “improvements,” the rifle was essentially the same. However, there were issues: the floating front sight on mine kept falling out, and I couldn’t get through a full magazine without a jam or failure to feed. This happened with both supplied magazines. After contacting Henry, they quickly sent me two new magazines and a few extra front sight inserts. I glued in the new sight and went back to the range. While the new sight was a great fix, the feeding issue persisted.

I put the gun in the safe, where it sat until yesterday, when I decided that maybe a couple of years in solitary confinement might have changed its attitude. Unfortunately, it seems I was just wishful thinking. I would like to put Henry back on my good list, as I know their reputation is otherwise impeccable. Any help would be greatly appreciated at this point. Please forward this message to any parties affiliated with Henry customer service or support. Thank you.

(5 out of 5) Sweet AR-7
by from Kennesaw, GA on

Just got the Henry AR-7. Took it out of the box, assembled it, and put accurate rounds down range in less than two minutes. Best assembly time was1:06 minutes. That was only the third time I put it together. Dead on at 25 yards out of the box. Day glo orange front sight pops into view. Rear sight is primitive but still has two size peep holes and elevation adjustment. Front sight is drift adjustable for wind age. Overall, for less than three bills, it shoots great. Already stowed it in the back of the truck. Holds sixteen rounds in two mags. I like more rounds capacity, so that is my sole complaint. You can only hold the two eight round mags in the buttstock. For the cost it’s a great plinker, and if stranded, a solid survival rifle. Just bring extra rounds, cause you never know when you might have to self rescue....
