I've been after this rifle for some time, but Remington's closure and re-acquisition put this model out of production for a while. It is everything I expected it would be. The weight is substantial, somewhere about 9.5 - 10 pounds without an optic or base, and the stock feels awesome. I wasn't aware that the stock is actually textured. Also, the bolt machining is incredible, and for an out-of-the-box, non-premium rifle, the action feels nice as well. The trigger, as adjusted from the factory, is slightly heavier than I would like. Timney makes what apparently is a fantastic trigger for these, and I may consider it down the line. The reviewer who claims to be a gunsmith has some odd takes on this rifle. Yes, mine had a very small amount of surface rust as well where the barrel met the receiver, but it was actually so insignificant that it wiped off with my finger. In the manual, Remington indicates that you are supposed to periodically oil the outside metal surfaces for this reason. The weapon was sitting in a humid state in a box with minimal oil on it likely for some time so this is not completely uncalled for. I oil all of the exterior surfaces of my weapons anyway. As to his complaints about the weight: what did you think you were buying? Yes, this is far heavier than the average modern hunting rifle and will be difficult to lug around if you're unfit. It's essentially an untuned version of the earlier versions of the military M24 rifle the same one Chris Kyle claims he got most of his kills with. Effectively, it is a retro sniper rifle and is usable for hunting, but the heavy-profiled 5-R barrel makes a bit more effort required. In fact, that 5-R barrel is the REASON one would pick this model over something like the ADL. One of my hunting buddies is a 71-year-old gentleman who carries a pre-64 Winchester Model 70, and it also weighs 12 pounds. Here in CA, we don't have much in the way of tree stands, so he humps that around on his shoulder for hours on end without a single complaint. 

Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore had this priced several hundred dollars less than competitors while it was on sale. I thought it was a mistake, actually, and I'm still not convinced that it wasn't. With all that said, I admit I haven't gotten to the range yet, but I'm more than happy with how it turned out, and I believe that Remington's quality control has improved since their new acquisition. Time will tell how it performs at the range.

I received my rifle and it had rust starting to form on the top of the barrel, in the scope mount hole plugs! I am a gunsmith so I pulled the barrel off the stock to check it out for more rust. I treated and removed surface rust in three spots. I am extremely disappointed in Remington's quality and quality control. The action on this rifle is pathetic! The bolt body is going to have to be polished along with the channel. The stock is nice but HEAVY! This is NOT a hunting rifle, it is a BENCH rifle. Bottom line: I will never purchase another Remington product ever again. I have the rifle on display in my shop to show customers how pathetic the rifle is!
